Service makes real impact on literacy

THIS year marks the 30th anniversary of the Literacy Network Manly Warringah.

Students and tutors benefit from working with each other. The service has existed to assist adults who experience difficulty with English.

Lit Net is a community based organisation that trains volunteer tutors to help native speakers, as well as those with migrant backgrounds, improve their English language skills.

“After tutors have completed an eight-week training program, they are matched with students with whom they work on a oneto-one basis,” co-director Amanda McDougall said.

“Tutors and students meet weekly for up to two hours in students’ homes, in a library or at the Lit Net office,” she said.

She said tutors, as well as students, came from a variety of backgrounds.

“They bring wonderful life experiences to Lit Net,” she said.

Mrs McDougall said many students arrived in Australia with a limited educational background. “The aim is to help as many people as possible with literacy,” she said.

There are still a number of students waiting to be matched to tutors.

The next training session for tutors begins Tuesday April 5 and runs every Tuesday until May 24, 10am to 12.30pm in Brookvale.

Thank you to our sponsors!

Literacy Network would like to thank Dee Why RSL for another generous donation in 2015. As a voluntary organisation, solely dependent on the work of volunteers, Literacy Network relies on the support of several local councils and service organisations. The money we receive enables us to purchase new student and tutor resources, update our computer technology, and defray the cost of renting premises.

On Wed 19 August, Anne Moorcroft and Robyn Smith were privileged to attend a Community welcome function at the Dee Why RSL along with 120 other groups who had received cheques. It was good to hear the mayor of Warringah and other leaders praising the role and efforts of a large band of volunteers.
On 17 August  Pittwater RSL officially handed over annual grants for local community service organisations. The Literacy Network was awarded $500.
In July, Warringah Council gave the Literacy Network an annual grant of $5000 towards our yearly operating costs.

Introducing the “Quote of the month”

Literacy Network is introducing a “Quote of the Month”! It will be posted on the door of the Literacy Network office, and also posted on the website for everyone to enjoy each month. The brainchild of one of our wonderful committee members, posting the quote on the office door aims to encourage people to linger and read all the other notices posted on the door!

The inaugural quote of the month is:

I find television very educating.

Every time somebody turns on the set,

I go into the other room and read a book. (Groucho Marx)
