We have recently finished the training of 15 new tutors and already 10 of those have been placed with students keen to study English. English lessons often take place in the student’s home but some students prefer to learn to read and write in local libraries. Congratulations to our new tutors!
National Year of Reading
You may have become aware that there is currently a campaign in Australia backed by the public libraries, the government and community groups called the National Year of Reading. The website for this is www.love2read.org.au. What shocked me was the statistic that 46% of our population do not have adequate literacy skills – that is, they cannot read a newspaper, follow a recipe nor understand instructions on medicine bottles. I am proud that Literacy Network is doing its best to address some of these needs – teaching adults in the Northern Beaches area to learn to read and write through a one-to-one free teaching program.
